Edgar Allen Poe Poster

“Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.”
Edgar Allen Poe
The Edgar Allen Poe Poster is a perfect example of all the right elements and all the right circumstances coming together at just the right time. A few years ago I was contracted by the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, VA to create a series of posters for their lineup of plays they had scheduled. One of the plays was call “In The Minds Eye” a mashup of Edgar Allen Poe’s most famous and amazing works. After a few conversations with the client we agreed on the idea of having some of the icons of his works popping out of his head. This could have been goofy or even gone horribly wrong. In this instance though everything came together wonderfully. I used a number of digital brushes to create a very wild and almost haphazard look to his hair that while in some ways random and out of control also matched the feeling and essence of Poe himself.

Have you ever relished in the darkness?

Do you enjoy showing off your morbid facinations?

Or maybe you’re just such a huge fan of Poe you’ve started your own dark shrine?

My name is Matthew Childers. I’ve been an illustrator and artist for over 20 years.

It all started with comics.

I’ve been a comic book fan since I was in Elementary school. I always wanted to tell stories and make comics people enjoy.

After spending the younger part of my art career as a graphic designer and art director I decided to make a change and start making comics myself. I illustrated an anthology of stories including The Four Horsemen, Dick Ruby and the Case of the Little Green Men, Hawk And A Handsaw and Ashes of The Immortals. After illustrating those amazing stories I was given the chance to draw an Army of Darkness story for Dynamite Comics.

Recently I wrote & illustrated a story for the Cthulhu Is Hard To Spell Anthology along with 35 other creative teams which funded on Kickstarter and is currently in production.

I am currently illustrating a three-issue fantasy series for Action Lab Comics entitled Moon Hunters: Tales of the River Folk.
