Dungeons and Dragons Illustrations

Earlier this year I was contacted by a huge Dungeon and Dragons fan to do some full illustrations of a couple of his characters. I had never done anything like this and was a bit overwhelmed when I first got the descriptions of the characters.

Many Dungeons and Dragons players are very specific with their character’s visual appearance. In this case, I had two pieces, one was very detailed and specific the other very open-ended. My huge challenge was making sure I didn’t overlook detail on one and to make sure the other one had enough detail to match.

To solve this particular dilemma I decided to make bullet-pointed notes for the first character based on the emails from the client. It gave me a checklist to go through and in effect check off before I presented to the client.

For the second, I did some research on the character race and was able to pull together something nice. It had quite a bit of energy and the only real struggle I had was the crossbow.

I did have a huge amount of fun with these and was very happy with how the colors came out.

My name is Matthew Childers. I am a comic book artist, illustrator, designer, sometimes writer and most of all a storyteller. I have been creating stories and drawing in the back of books since I was a little kid in overalls living in Charlotte, North Carolina. I grew up reading X-Men, Star Wars, Transformers… all the biggies and knew one day I’d make comics of my own.
